Ronnie is receiving most of his attention from the Big 12, so Michigan's name really does pop out on the list. And, talking to Ronnie, he definitely seems to be very interested in Michigan. I got a chance to interview him last week on a couple of different topics surrounding football and the recruiting process.
Hoke's Mad Magicians: When did you realize you are a good enough football player to compete at the college level?
Ronnie Larue: I've always worked hard, and, growing up, I always thought I would go to college for football. But basically, during my junior high years is when it was clear I was pretty good.
HMM: You are listed as an athlete. What do you play most on the field, though?
Larue: This upcoming year, I will start at strong safety and slot receiver, but will also play quarterback and outside linebacker.
HMM: Can you list your top schools up to this point?
Larue: In no order: California, Michigan, SMU, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M.
HMM: What has the recruiting process been like so far?
Larue: Stressing but also a blessing because God has allowed me to be apart of it.
HMM: Who has been your biggest motivation through your time with football?
Larue: Honestly, I do it to make my family proud. So I'd say, basically, I do it for my whole family.
Here are the basic listings for Larue:
Ronnie should be very successful no matter where he decides to go to college. The biggest thing he has working for him right now is his versatility on the field. He has the ability to play just about anywhere, and college coaches love guys who can step into the program with experience all around the field. Scout is the only one at this point with him listed as a specific position, quarterback and safety, but they seem to lean towards quarterback, so perhaps that is where he will end up playing in college.
Just like most any other recruit coming out of the 2014 class, Ronnie can really help himself out by adding size. Strength is definitely there; Larue maxes out at 265 pounds on the bench press, but adding to his 180 pounds will be very key over the next couple of years. Regardless, with his age, this isn't something that should raise any alarm flags. I mean, he won't end up on campus until 2014, which is two years away. He has plenty of time to address these concerns.
Michigan certainly has a chance here, but getting any recruits out of the state of Texas is always a major challenge. Just about every school in the state of Texas appears to be interested, although Texas' interest seems limited at this time, so it will be a battle. Along with this, both major schools in Oklahoma appear interested, adding even more of a challenge at the local level.
It's way to early to make any projects about Larue yet, but if anybody can get Larue to attend college outside of the state of Texas, it's going to be Hoke. If the local schools start pushing his recruitment, most notably Texas, don't get your fingers crossed. He's a great kid and should be a tremendous pick-up for any program.
