In some exciting recruiting news for Michigan basketball, 2014 forward Vincent Edwards has been offered by Michigan. I previewed Edwards earlier this summer and he is a player that will likely end up on every Michigan basketball fan's radar over the next year. So far, Michigan has only offered a few prospects in the 2014 recruiting class and has only secured one commitment (Austin Hatch). Edwards could very easily shake up Michigan's 2014 recruiting class and be the first real commitment for Michigan in 2014, since Hatch originally committed in 2013.
Edwards shared the news on Twitter and also noted that he would be soon be making a visit to Ann Arbor. Only two of the major scouting services have rated him at this point, but their ratings have been pretty solid so far. Scout has him as a 3* and Rivals has put him as a 4* recruit and the #66 player in the nation. In my preview, I said that Edwards "seemed" like a 4* recruit to me and I thought he would end up closer to his ranking on Rivals than to his ranking on Scout. I definitely still feel this way, but either way, he definitely is a quality player and could be an impact player for Michigan, if he commits, for a few solid seasons.
Edwards has a plethora of talents, but his best may be his shooting ability. Rivals only rates it as "developing", but he can easily nail shots out to 25 feet and can attack the basket at a moment's notice, which makes defending him even more difficult. Accompany this with his tremendous speed and solid passing and he is deadly on the offensive side of the ball. I do think he need to work on his size, which he talked about in an interview with UMHoops and his rebounding, but he still has time before college.
Needless to say, Michigan's recruitment of Edwards will be nothing easy. In a recent interview with UMHoops, Edwards only had positive things to say about Michigan, but several other schools definitely appear to be attracting his interest. Two of the notable schools that have already offered him include Purdue and West Virginia. These schools along with Michigan appear to be in the leading position right now and it's hard to see anybody else really getting into the race, but schools like Wisconsin and Ohio State do seem to be expressing at least slight interest.
Michigan is definitely in the race at this point and it's going to be exciting to watch. Either way, it will be a battle to the end and Michigan has some solid hopes at landing one of the better players in the 2014 class. The class is definitely not set at all at this point, but the offers are starting to go out that will put the group together.
