Introducing 2015 Prospect Hyron Edwards

Right now, 2013 and 2014 recruiting is all the talk, but 2015 recruiting has already been heating up for Michigan as well.  No offers have been given out and they probably won't be given out until June 2013, but that doesn't mean that Michigan isn't pursuing recruits.  One of the hottest on the list is Hyron Edwards from East Chicago, Indiana.  He's been getting a ton of attention from many big-time college basketball programs and is definitely all over Beilein's radar at this point.


Standing at 5'11" and weighing 145 lbs, he's a pretty average sized point guard.  However, being so young, I don't think there's any doubt that he will be much bigger when he gets to college.  Whether it's just an inch or half a foot, he should be taller and I don't think there's any doubt that he will put on some weight as well.  Edwards has been identified for his ball handling, passing, and ability to get around defenders.  However, the major part of his game that drives these factors and takes him to the next level is his quickness.  In reviewing some highlight videos, it seems as if he can get to the basketball at will by using his quickness.  This advantage will obviously be smaller in college with better trained athletes, but he is very fast and I only expect this to be better used as he gets older and more experienced.

There's no doubt that it is still early in the 2015 evaluation and ranking process.  Only two of the sites have ranked Edwards and even those have some big differences.  The one thing that should be noted is that Scout does still have him at an elite positional rank, but for some reason has him with a 3* ranking, which doesn't make a ton of sense.  To me, he is an elite recruit and should be high 4* to 5* status.  ESPN already has him there and I anticipate the other recruiting services will too once they get more evaluations done.  I expect that the recruiting services will take points off for his height, but as we all know with Trey Burke, height isn't always the most important factor in point guard play.


As I mentioned, Edwards has been getting a lot of attention from some of the bigger basketball programs around the country.  He has already received offers from Indiana and Purdue and has also received attention from Michigan, Illinois, MSU, Northwestern, and Xavier.  When a player is receiving this much attention and won't be on campus until after two full basketball seasons have been completed, he is something special.  He has recently conducted visits of both Indiana and Purdue and hopes to visit Michigan once the July evaluation period has ended.


So what are Michigan's chances with Edwards?  By all accounts, the Wolverines are in pretty good shape right now.  Although they won't offer for about another year, Edwards has spoken about how the facilities at Indiana separated the Hoosiers from the Boilermakers.  Well, Michigan's basketball facilities will now be top notch and I know that's something that is probably drawing him towards Michigan.  Unless something changes in the near future, this should be another Michigan vs. Indiana recruiting battle.  It will be interesting to see if things change once he arrives on campus, but this recruitment probably won't conclude for a very long time.
