Breaking Down Michigan's Targets In The 2014 247Sports Top 25

247Sports has begun their process of rankings the 2014 recruiting class.  It will be a very long time before they make it through all the recruits and compare them, but they have released a list of the Top 25 players in the 2014 recruiting class.  This list will undergo massive changes before the final rankings, especially because 247 hasn't gotten around to ranking a large number of recruits for 2014 yet, but it's still an interesting list to evaluate.


As I talked about in my breakdowns of the top 2014 recruits according to ESPN, Rivals, and Scout, everyone of these lists needs to be taken with a grain of salt.  ESPN seems to have the best basketball rankings and I've said this on multiple occasions and 247 probably has the worst, but it's just one list. By the end of 247's rankings, they aren't that far off, but they are just so slow are ranking players.  I mean, every other site has a 2014 list with at least 60 players so far, 247's list has just 25 guys.  I mean some of Michigan's top targets haven't even been ranked yet.  This shouldn't disqualify the list as of now, but it is something to note before you look at the overall rankings.

• #7 - Kevon Looney

Obviously, this is a pretty small list.  The biggest thing worth noting is just how far behind 247Sports is at this point.  They have yet to rate two of the three players currently offered by Michigan; Devin Booker and Keita Bates-Diop.  They did finally rate Trevon Bluiett as a 3* recruit, who has been offered by Michigan, but they were a good bit behind on ranking him as well.  I'm not necessarily challenging the rankings that 247 eventually makes, but I would just like to point out that their rankings just come out way later than other recruiting services.  I wouldn't say give up on 247 because of this, but it does leave some question marks.


Now, actually moving on to evaluating the list and the one serious Michigan target that appears, Kevon Looney.  He's actually rated pretty high on this list.  Scout has him at #9 in the country, but the others have him in the double digits.  Obviously, we're talking about a consensus 5* recruit, so sliding down a few spots isn't a big deal, but 247 seems to be pretty high on him at this point.  Since they are so behind on ranking recruits, I wouldn't be surprised to see him drop a little just because of unranked or currently ranked recruits moving up, but either way, he's in good position.  I don't see much out of line with this ranking.


This list gives us a little more security on the position of Kevon Looney, as having another scouting service replicate the findings of the other services always helps.  It is frustrating to see elite recruits like Devin Booker and Keita Bates-Diop not ranked, but that's just the nature of the game.  As time goes on, I think Michigan's impact on future lists will be more significant.  The big thing will just be keeping an eye on updates to these rankings and see where Michigan's targets are ranked.
